Lately, I’ve been frequently asked by Japanese students about the pronunciation of ㄖ (ri) and ㄜ (e).

It seems to be related to the phonetic rules of the Japanese syllabary, which has fewer guttural sounds and fewer retroflex sounds. Because of this, more muscle training and practice are needed.

Here are some small tips that might help you if you're struggling:

  • "ri" (ㄖ) is pronounced with the same mouth shape and tongue position as "shi" (ㄕ), but you need to produce sound from your throat.

  • If you want to check whether you're using your vocal cords properly, place your hand on your throat—if you feel vibrations, it means your vocal cords are engaged.

  • The pronunciation of "ㄜ" is a relaxed and natural sound. Keep your mouth slightly open and your tongue relaxed. Just imitate the "ㄜ" sound, and you’ll get it right!
