A young woman and man stand in a grassy field, serious expressions. Both wear beige and white shirts with text. "A Brighter Summer Day."

Director Edward Yang - A Brighter Summer Day (Taiwanese film)

Before the movie starts, it is explained: "In that era, people were in panic. People with uneasy feelings crossed the sea to Taiwan and formed groups to eliminate their inner uneasiness."

Beginning with a shot on the set, the distance and angle in the picture allow the audience to easily understand the material conditions at that time. nothing special in the studio, people wear on simple clothes except the actress, everyone holding a Chinese fan to cool down, and lighting tools are also very simple.

At this time, the camera moved up strangely, and saw two teenagers squatting on the eaves, eating snacks and reading books. One of them touched the other with his elbow. The two looked down at the same time. It turned out that the actress was changing clothes below.

Those who have watched the movie "Yi Yi" know director Edward Yangs shooting style and may be more receptive to the uncertainty in the first half of the film. Similar to "Yi Yi", the movie has a special rhythm and special camera movement. The shooting techniques are very different from the modern movie style with full sound and light effects. If you don’t watch carefully or don’t want to know the details carefully, it is easy to fall asleep due to boredom. However, if you carefully observe the director’s movements, the special techniques used will give you a lot of fun besides the story itself. People who know less about this part can have a closer understanding of the movie through other people's drama reviews. I believe it will definitely be a refreshing experience.

The story itself is adapted from real events. You can easily find the content of the story online. Here, I only share my personal opinions.

When I just watched the movie, the first thought that came to my mind was "the tragedy of the times." However, if the time and space background is put to the present, I think it is possible that the same incident will happen again. In the play, the heroine was killed. Before the tragedy happen, she said: "Why don't you understand? This world will not change for you. I am just like this world, which will not change for you." Such a sober world, let alone teenagers, even adults , we may still feel like we are blindfolded sometimes, unable to figure it out no matter how hard we try.

When I was working for a traditional company , a senior told me that "It seems that the world is changing all the time, and it's changing very fast, but there are many things that never change." When I heard these words, I just felt that the world is always changing, if we continue believe that "no changing" is correct, we will definitely not be able to maintain our competitiveness and will definitely fall behind the times. And if the age of roles in the movie and the time background are applied to one person, it is probably what my eldest aunt looked like when she was a child. However, the strict instructors on campus, being called to the discipline office for doing something wrong, and encountering in the health room... The same thing happened to me until I was a teenager. Maybe for some people, those "unchanged" things just stay "unchanged". I heard that scolding and punishment are not allowed on campus now? It's probably quite different, right? Compared to our younger generation, the world is really constantly changing.

The tragic heroine is "Xiao Ming". She has a face that is mature beyond her years, and she reacts indifferently to many big events. However, it can be seen from many details that she is actually very insecure, and she has gained safety through having relationship with powerful people. She has been living in switching acting modes at any time for a long time. This kind of survival skills was noticed by the director on the set, and he praised her for "she crying when director ask her to cry and laughing when director asks her to". However, who knows how much she suffered from gaining the survival skills.

Regarding the movie "A Brighter Summer Day", I personally do not recommend it to students who are not interested in Taiwanese history, Taiwanese movies, and film shooting techniques.

I'm afraid you will be unhappy of being disappointed.

But I really recommend it to anyone who is interested in Taiwanese history, Taiwanese movies, or film shooting techniques.

There are so many details worth discussing in detail.

Maybe during our discussion, we will be surprised by each other's observations!
